Coir is the protective hairy layer that surrounds the coconut and extracting it is a process that takes time. It takes twelve glorious months of sunshine before the coconut has grown to full size. Just before it ripens, the notched tree trunks are climbed and the fruit collected by hand. These are then suspended in water for up to ten months after which they’re beaten to separate out the fibres. Once dried, the fibres are cleaned and spun into yarn.
